Sustainability is the hype word of the twenty first century, we’ve all heard about it, and no doubt implemented some aspect of the four ‘R’s’ into our daily lives. Many occupational therapists and community focus groups have programmes that encourage more “sustainable” practices. In this blog I will discuss if sustainable activities meet the chosen needs of the individual or community, or the required social and environmental outcomes envisaged by the Occupational Therapist.

Well I currently have a plastic bag full of veggie and fruit peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds, all ready to take out to the compost. I really enjoy the sense of not wasting anything, so the whole sustainability (but more zero-waste) movement appeals to me. Honestly, I'm scheming to get an indoor worm farm so that I can feed them things that I can't really compost and don't want to throw. Like, I've read that they will eat the paper out of tetrapak packaging and that leaves the plastic/foil bits. That's less stuff in the landfill at least and that's great cos I was always annoyed that you can't recycle tetrapak cos it's not pure cardboard.
